Once Upon A Time...
THis is the story how we started our book club. Don't worry, it's a quick one.
My roommate and I wanted to join a book club.
Couldn't find one, so we started our own. Okay to be honest, we didn't look for one.
BUT with our busy work schedules we didn't have time to search high and low for one we liked (both work semi intense jobs in Washington, DC. Not in the ER, but both in PR. For those of you who know, you knowwwww.) So we started one.
Alas, here we are.
We set a few simple, but necessary ground rules to make ourselves feel official.
1. Pick an agreed upon date, but be flexible. There was zero chance we would be able to make the same day of the week work every month. If you pay attention to the government and politics, they control both of our souls AND the reason we get paid, so we are beholden to their craziness. Sometimes that craziness means book club needs to be rescheduled for other priorities: a bottle of wine needs to be consumed OR we need to binge watch the latest Netflix series. Don't you dare judge us.
2. Read the book, but no worries if not. Look. Life is busy AF sometimes and this is supposed to be enjoyable. If we started acting like this was a monthly reading assignment we would both start to resent it. So, we decided if we didn't read it, the other person would just have to explain it. It's actually pretty entertaining when it happens.
3. Always pair with food and wine. This was crucial. We both share a love for cooking and drinking wine and a love for books. All three are basically a night of heaven for us. Each book club we try to pair a wine and cook a meal that aligns to the book. Gonna be honest though, most of the time we just cook whatever we feel like cooking and drink whatever wine we have in stock.
Our first book club was in February of 2018. We had two people show up. I'm sure you can guess who the two people were.
Since then, we've exponentially grown and it's been crazy how fun it is to sit, eat, drink wine and talk about books. Also, surprise surprise: People love the idea of being part of a book club that doesn't have ridiculous rules or shame you for not reading the book.
And that's how we got our start. This blog is a fun experiment. Just like the book club, it's supposed to be a no bullshit, zero-stress blog. Will likely talk about the books, take photos of books and interview people who also love books. It's as simple as that. Hope you enjoy it!
The End.
